Discoid Lateral Meniscus Associated with Anomalous Insertion of the Medial Meniscus

Abstract
Discoid lateral meniscus in the knee joint is not uncommon. During the period of July 1990 until September 1992, we performed arthroscopy with 534 knee joints. 77 cases out of 72 patients were identified to have discoid lateral meniscus, which
was
12.5%. Among the 77 cases treated, 4 cases95.2%) had discoid lateral meniscus associated with anomalous insertion of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus up along the course of the anterior cruciate ligament. We reshaped the discoid lateral
menisci
ofd the 4 cases and did followups from 12 months to 24 months(20months on average0 after surgery. The result was satisfactory except for one case whose knee was damaged because of an accident.
Therefore, we have concluded that this anatomical variant is not related to the symptoms.
